Initial ideas & thoughts for pitch proposal.

Is still life becoming commercialised?

  • Define still life & commercial photography.
  • What it used to be like?
  • Why/how has it become commercialised?
    • Did it have a message before?
    • Include photographers for both.
    • Examples.
  • Arguments for and against?
  • Is money a factor?
    • Marketing.
    • Making it commercial has given it a purpose? (The Arts Council Collection (1989) It’s a still life. London: The Southbank Board.)
    • Turning things into an ‘object of desire’. (Rowell, M. (1997) Objects of desire: the modern still life. New York: The Museum of Modern Art.)
    • Consumer culture.
  • What does still life mean to different people?
  • Commercial work mostly found online – has digital age/paradigm shift made still life photography become commercial to be noticed/appreciated?
  • Photography: A Critical Introduction – Liz Wells.
  • Photography – Stephen Bull.
  • This is my idea, what is my argument, use the artists and case studies to support this.
