Appropriation, archives and vernacular.

  • Duchamp’s Urinal, 1917. Why was this the most important piece of art in the 20th Century?
  • Would have seen things like Damian Hirst’s Shark, 1991, or Jeff Koon’s inflatable bunny if he hadn’t done this.
  • An archive: a place in which public records or historical documents are preserved; also the material preserved. Eg. Personal, private, schools, hospitals, taxes, family photographs.
  • Robert Opie – collector of memorabilia of times gone by with particular interest in 1970s/80s. Comprehensive of everyday objects.
  • Vernacular photography – refers to the creation of photographs, usually by amateur or unknown photographers, who take everyday life and common things as subjects. Taken for one purpose and become something else. Types: travel, vacation, photos of friends, class portraits ect.
  • In almost every picture – Ria 1936.
  • Eric Kessels collected albums at Palais de Larchevehe, in which he rehistorizes the vernacular family album.
  • Thomas Dworzac – Taliban. At the time, the Taliban had banned photography and all studios were being closed.
  • Very Miscellaneous 1996 – Joachim Schmid.
  • Mohini Chandra – Album pacifica.
  • I know you Lucy Booth – Rachel James.
  • John Stezaker.
  • Christian Boltanski – to memorialize ordinary people during the Holocaust.
  • Unhistorical moments – Shuka Glotman. Photographed in a town that no longer exists, presents the work as evidence that it did exist, a testament to a once standing Palestinian village.
  • People in trouble – Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin. Make sense of other people’s archives, make sense of them in everyday context.
  • Let’s be honest the weather helped – Walid Raad.
  • Kurdistan In the Shadow of History – Susan Meiselas.
  • Whose archive is it?
  • Whose story is it?
  • Who is the author?
  • Senna 2010, all made out of archived footage.
  • Grizzly Man, 2005.
  • Could any of these stories be told without found footage/archival material?
