Fred Ritchin: In Our Own Image – A Pixellated Press (1999).

Summary points:

  • “Does not explain that this image was not the photograph it seemed to be”.
  • Retouching photos allowed for feature/fashion images.
  • A photo can give the idea of something that wasn’t really happening by manipulation.
  • Manipulation been around since 1840 – Hippolyte Bayard, “Self Portrait as a Drowned Man”.
  • Huge number of ways in which a photograph can be edited.
  • Easier access to manipulation means the greater desire to do so.
  • What some may see as okay, others disagree with. “One person’s enhancement is another person’s alteration”.
  • Henri Cartier-Bresson’s ‘decisive moment’ can now be achieved whenever, not just when the photograph was taken.
  • Often with newspaper pictures that have been retouched, the changes are not made obvious to the reader.
  • With increasing access to technology and manipulating software, how will we tell what has been edited?
  • “There’s no real concern about putting figures where they aren’t as long as you don’t alter the news itself” – Ben Blank.
