Presentation skills

Today’s lecture on presentation skills was interesting and essential for the next 3 years. Over the course there will be a number of times where I will have to present and explain my work to others. Being one of the less confident people when doing so, remembering and adapting these key skills will help me greatly in the future.

– Preparation is essential. If you know what material you have, what you are going to say and any visual aids ready to hand out then this will reduce room for error and ensure a smooth flow of the presentation. Visual aids are good if information needs to be remembered – either point out that it is vital so notes can be taken or provide them with a hard copy. Always have a back up plan if things go wrong, think of the alternatives. Make sure you have rehearsed again and again beforehand.

– It is important to make sure it is clear to the audience what you are presenting about. Explain why you are presenting about it and make sure you introduce yourself. Tone of voice is important as monotone can become tedious so the audience loses interest. Set the theme and stick to it, keeping the presentation clear and consistent.

– A lot of information can be daunting, therefore make sure it is broken down into smaller sections and go through the points slowly. Follow a set, logical order to avoid confusion and make sure it all fits. It is just as important to make sure little things like spelling and punctuation are correct. Make sure the presentation is easy on the eye as well as keeping colours simple.

– When talking about photographers it is important not to just voice your opinion, make sure you have facts to feed the audience with more information.

– Using quotes can make the presentation more interesting, giving a ‘personal’ effect of the photographers true feelings. However it is important to make sure these are relevant to the theme.

– The audience are very important when it comes to presenting as they are the ones who interpret your actions and what you have provided for them. Think about the correct environment for them and whether it is comfortable. Make sure they are involved and active. Invite opportunities for questions and a little humour doesn’t hurt. Keep it interesting and entertaining.

– Presenting can be really nerve racking so its important to stay calm and in control. Writing a few notes can be beneficial to prompt yourself. Imagine you are talking to a friend, take time to pause and remember to breathe!
